The planting plan was unlike anything I'd expected. Every plant was explained: not just what it was, but why it was there, what it would do through the year, and what I'd need to do with it. I came away feeling genuinely confident about the garden for the first time.
Designed around your maintenance reality
Before I choose a single plant, I ask how much time you genuinely want to spend in your garden each week. Not how much time you think you should spend, but how much you actually want to.
That answer shapes everything: the depth of borders, the species I recommend, the surfaces underfoot. The Silver package produces a garden you can maintain without it becoming a second job.
Yorkshire soils and microclimates vary considerably. Before I create a planting plan, I assess your actual conditions: drainage, aspect, shade pattern, and pH. This means plants that will establish well and thrive, not expensive experiments that fail within two years.
A planting plan you can actually use
Your planting plan is drawn clearly and labelled in plain language, not in Latin alone. Every plant includes a note on why it was chosen, what it contributes through the seasons, and what it needs from you.
You can hand it to a contractor, take it to a nursery, or work from it yourself. It's designed to be useful, not something to file away.
Most Silver projects fall between £3,000 and £6,000 + VAT, depending on garden size and complexity. Fixed-price packages, no hidden costs. I'm happy to give you a clear, honest indication before anything is arranged.
Questions about the Silver package
How much does the Silver package cost?
Fees depend on the size and complexity of your garden. Most Silver projects fall between £3,000 and £6,000 + VAT. I'm happy to give you a clear, honest indication before anything is arranged. Fixed-price packages, no hidden costs.
How long does the design process take?
From the initial consultation to completed drawings, most Silver projects take between six and ten weeks. This depends on the size and complexity of the garden, and how quickly we move through the revision stage. I'll give you a realistic timeline at the start, and I keep to it.
What does a garden designer actually do?
A garden designer assesses your site (soil, light, drainage, aspect), listens to how you use your garden and how much time you have, and then produces a set of scaled drawings covering layout, structure, materials, levels, and a detailed planting plan. I also provide a written specification your contractor can build from, and I'm available to answer questions throughout the process.
How involved will I be?
As involved as you'd like. I share the concept design with you before developing anything further, and I explain my thinking at every stage. Some clients want to be closely involved in every decision; others prefer to trust the process and see the result. Both work perfectly well.
What if I already have planting I want to keep?
Very common, and entirely workable. I always assess what's already in the garden before designing around it. Established plants that suit the space will be incorporated into the design wherever possible. It's a much more sustainable approach, and it often produces better results.
Can you design in any style?
The style follows the character of the house, the landscape, and what you respond to, not a particular aesthetic I'm trying to apply. I've designed formal Yorkshire walled gardens, relaxed naturalistic borders, contemporary courtyard spaces, and everything in between. The design is yours, not mine.
Do you help with finding a builder?
I can suggest trusted local landscapers and contractors where I have established relationships. I don't manage the build as part of the Silver package, but build supervision is available as an optional add-on. I'm always available to answer questions from your contractor during the project.
Do I need the consultation first?
Yes. The consultation is always the starting point, for every project. It gives me the information I need to design well, and it gives you the information to choose the right package with confidence. It also counts toward the overall project, so nothing is wasted.
What Silver clients say
The planting plan was unlike anything I'd expected. Every plant was explained: not just what it was, but why it was there, what it would do through the year, and what I'd need to do with it. I came away feeling genuinely confident about the garden for the first time.
Sally asked questions I hadn't thought to ask myself. The result is a garden we actually use, every day, without it feeling like a chore.
