Garden designer York — Sally Tierney
Designing private gardens in York and the surrounding villages since 1997. Practical, wildlife-friendly, and built to last.
Garden design in York — rooted in the city's character
I've been designing gardens in and around York since 1997. The city has a character that's quite unlike anywhere else in Yorkshire — walled gardens behind Georgian townhouses, long narrow plots in the Victorian terraces, and larger open gardens in the villages just outside the ring road.
York sits in the Vale of York, which means heavy clay soil for most properties. That's not a problem — it's actually fertile and moisture-retentive — but it does need understanding. Gardens designed without accounting for clay tend to struggle: waterlogged in winter, baked hard in summer, and full of plants that would rather be somewhere else.
I design gardens that work with York's conditions, not against them. That means choosing plants that genuinely thrive in clay, designing drainage where it's needed, and creating gardens that look good through every season — not just the six weeks of summer.
York gardens — what I've found over the years
The soil is the first thing. York's clay is heavy, slow to warm in spring, and prone to waterlogging if drainage isn't considered. But it's also nutrient-rich and holds moisture well through dry summers. The key is improving structure with organic matter and choosing plants that genuinely tolerate winter wet — not just 'prefer moisture' on a label.
The second thing is scale. Many York gardens are smaller than their owners expect to work with — especially in the city centre and the older suburbs. But small doesn't mean limited. Some of my favourite designs have been for courtyard gardens and narrow plots where every square metre has to earn its place.
Both of these are entirely fixable. They just need a designer who's seen them before and knows what works. That's what twenty-five years in this city gives you.

Our garden is in the centre of York — hemmed in, north-facing, and with that difficult Vale clay. Sally didn't flinch. She'd clearly seen it all before. The design she produced made the space feel twice the size, and everything she planted has thrived. We couldn't be happier.

Sally asked questions I hadn't thought to ask myself. The result is a garden we actually use, every day, without it feeling like a chore.
