Garden design in Wetherby and the A1 corridor villages
Wetherby and the villages along the A1 corridor — Boston Spa, Collingham, Bramham, Clifford, Thorp Arch — sit on a ridge of magnesian limestone that runs south from Thirsk. It's a distinctive geological feature, and it creates gardens that behave quite differently from those just a few miles east in the Vale of York or west toward Harrogate.
The soils here are free-draining, alkaline, and often quite shallow over rock. That sounds limiting, but it actually suits a beautiful range of traditional English garden planting — and these villages have some of the loveliest gardens in Yorkshire. The challenge isn't what won't grow. It's understanding what will thrive without constant intervention.
I've been designing gardens in this area since 1997. I know the soil, I know the exposure, and I know which plants actually perform here year after year. That's the difference between a garden that looks good for a season and one that keeps getting better.
What makes Wetherby area gardens distinctive
The magnesian limestone gives these gardens their character. The soil is alkaline, free-draining, and warms quickly in spring — which means an earlier start to the growing season than the heavy clay gardens a few miles east. But it also dries out fast in summer, and in some spots the soil is barely a spade's depth over solid rock.
That means plant selection matters more here than almost anywhere else I work. Get it right and you'll have a garden that practically looks after itself. Get it wrong and you'll be replacing plants every other year. I've been designing for this soil for over twenty years, and I know exactly what works.
The other thing that makes this area special is the villages themselves. Boston Spa, Collingham, Bramham — they've all got a strong sense of place. Stone walls, mature trees, established hedgerows. A good garden design here doesn't fight that context. It works with it.

We'd tried planting things ourselves for years and couldn't understand why nothing lasted. Sally explained the limestone soil in about two minutes and then designed a garden full of plants that actually belong here. It's been three years and everything is thriving. We wish we'd called her sooner.
