Garden design in Knaresborough and the Nidd Valley
Knaresborough is one of the most distinctive small towns in North Yorkshire, and its gardens reflect that. Steep slopes down to the Nidd gorge, old stone walls, mature trees, and a mix of period properties and newer builds on the edges of town. It's a place with real character — and gardens here need to respond to that.
I've been designing gardens in and around Knaresborough for over twenty years. I know the slopes, I know the soils, and I know the microclimates that come with being perched above a river valley. Gardens on the gorge side behave very differently from gardens on the plateau above, and that matters when you're choosing plants and planning structure.
The villages around Knaresborough — Goldsborough, Flaxby, Staveley, Farnham — each have their own character too. Larger plots, more exposure, and often that transition from sandstone to magnesian limestone that changes what'll thrive. I design for all of it.
The character of gardens in this area
Knaresborough gardens tend to have strong bones — old walls, established trees, and slopes that give them natural structure. The challenge is often working with what's already there rather than starting from scratch. A good redesign here means understanding what deserves to stay and what's holding the garden back.
The soils vary more than people expect. The town itself sits on a mix of sandstone and limestone, but move a few hundred metres in any direction and you can hit heavy clay, free-draining sand, or shallow soil over rock. That's why a proper site assessment matters here more than almost anywhere else I work.

We'd been putting off the garden for years because of the slope and the soil. Sally came, looked at it properly, and said 'this is actually a really interesting garden to work with.' She was right. The design she produced works beautifully with the gradient, and we finally have a garden we enjoy spending time in.
