Garden design in Harrogate — and a particular connection

I've won two Gold medals at the Harrogate Flower Show, and it's a place that means a great deal to me professionally. But my connection to Harrogate goes beyond the showground. I've been designing private gardens in the town and surrounding villages since 1997.

In that time I've worked on Victorian villa gardens in the town centre, larger rural plots around Pannal and Beckwithshaw, and everything in between. I know the soils here — the sandstone and gritstone that makes Harrogate's gardens so different from the heavy clay just a few miles east in the Vale of York.

Harrogate has a strong gardening culture. People here care about their gardens, and they notice the details. That suits the way I work — carefully, thoroughly, and with real attention to what'll actually thrive in the ground you've got.

What I've learned about Harrogate gardens

Harrogate's soils are sandstone and gritstone based — free-draining, slightly acidic, and lower in fertility than the Vale clays to the east. They warm up quickly in spring and they're kind to a wide range of ornamental planting, including many plants that struggle in wetter ground elsewhere in Yorkshire.

The flip side is that they dry out fast in summer. Mulching matters here, and so does choosing plants that can handle a dry spell without collapsing. I've learned over the years which cultivars actually perform in Harrogate conditions and which ones just look good in the catalogue.

The other thing I've noticed is that Harrogate gardens tend to be well-established. Many of them have mature trees, existing structure, and a history. Redesigning a garden like that isn't about starting from scratch — it's about understanding what's already working, keeping what deserves to stay, and improving the rest.

We'd lived with our Harrogate garden for fifteen years without really resolving it. We knew something was wrong but we couldn't identify what. Sally walked through it once and immediately understood — the proportions were off, the planting was wrong for the soil, and nothing was connecting. She fixed all three. The garden finally makes sense.
